Project Partners

All four project partners have a series of existing collaborations and partnerships on which they can build. M-ITI (Madeira) is already collaborating with Community Energy Scotland and Eday Renewable Energy as part of a H2020 project on smart meters. IT University of Copenhagen has been collaborating with Community Energy Scotland, as well as the energy sector across the Orkney Islands, for over eight years.

Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (M-ITI)

James Auger is a designer, researcher and lecturer whose work examines the social, cultural and personal impacts of technology and the products that exist as a result of its development and application. On graduating from Design Products (MA) at the Royal College of Art in 2001 James moved to Dublin to conduct research at Media Lab Europe (MLE) exploring the theme of human communication as mediated by technology. Between 2005 and 2015 James was part of the critically acclaimed Design Interactions department at the RCA, teaching on the MA programme and continuing his development of critical and speculative approaches to design and technology, completing his PhD on the subject in 2012. James recently moved to M-ITI in Portugal. His new research explores the potential of the Island as an experimental living laboratory through a combination of fictional, factual and functional multi-scale energy-related proposals and projects.

Julian Hanna is an Assistant Professor at M-ITI. His work focuses on intersections between culture, politics, and technology. After completing his PhD at the University of Glasgow, Julian taught modern literature and culture at the University of British Columbia and the University of Lisbon. He has written extensively about modernism and the avant-garde, with a particular focus on movements, networks, and manifestos, for publications such as the Journal of Modern Literature, the European Journal of English Studies, Modernism/Modernity, and The Atlantic, and in a book, Key Concepts in Modernist Literature. Since joining M-ITI in 2013 his research has expanded to include design fiction, interactive storytelling, and other creative facets of human-computer interaction, with recent collaborations including the EU-funded Future Fabulators project. He co-authors a critical futures blog with James Auger.

IT University of Copenhagen

Laura Watts is a poet, writer, ethnographer, and Associate Professor at the IT University of Copenhagen. An interdisciplinary scholar trained in Social Studies of Science and Technology (Lancaster University) and an Independent Artist, her research and practice is concerned with the effect of landscape and location on how the future is imagined and made. She also develops different literary and ethnographic methods for writing the future, from fanzines to poetry, from art books to landscape installation. She has worked with the mobile telecoms industry, the renewable energy industry, and the public transport sector, and has spent the last eight years working in collaboration with the people and places of the marine energy industry in Orkney, Scotland. She is co-author of the artisan book Data Stories a set of ethnographic stories around Big Data, and also Ebban an’ Flowan, the world’s first poetic primer to marine renewable energy. Community Energy Scotland

CES is an independent, membership based charity and social enterprise whose aim is to build confidence, wealth and resilience at local level through sustainable energy. It has been at the forefront of community energy developments in Scotland since 2002—working with over 1,000 community groups to develop on- and off-grid renewable energy projects totalling 37MW. At a primary, grassroots level Community Energy Scotland supports communities on a partnership basis, connecting them with relevant technology partners and guiding them through the project development process to implement renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. At a secondary level CES works with government and industry to remove barriers to development and create an enabling environment. It assists on a technical, financial, regulatory, policy and planning basis.

Eday Renewable Energy Ltd.

Eday Renewable Energy owns and operates a 900kW wind turbine on behalf of the island community of 150 people. The company gifts profits to its parent charity, the Eday Partnership, that is dedicated to improve services, boost the economy and raise living standards for the islanders. ERE has extensive knowledge of the operation of its wind turbine (commissioned in 2012) and the actively managed non-firm grid connection. Community Power Orkney, the local coalition of non-profit turbine groups including ERE, won a SURF Partnership Award in 2012. Energy storage and controllable local demand have been two focuses of its efforts to improve the turbine's performance.
